Charming 18th Century Colonial Cape Cod Surrounded by Protected Parkland

It would be difficult to find a restored antique home offering the seclusion, charm and surprisingly convenient location as this vintage Colonial Cape Cod in Chester Township. Originally built in the 1790s, thoughtful renovations and expansions have retained much of the home’s original character. Set along a quiet gravel road on 5.2 bucolic acres, the property is surrounded by approximately 2,500 acres of state parkland and open space. All this tranquility is just five minutes from historic downtown Chester for shops, restaurants, schools and access to major roadways.

Centered in the middle of the Hacklebarney State Park area as well as dedicated county and township open space, the home offers year ‘round views of wildlife, bird sightings and leafy forests. Behind the home is the picturesque Lamington River, while nature walks on the gravel roadway take in the serenity of the adjacent parkland.

Inside, the two-bedroom, two full bath floor plan is bright, airy and sunlit from numerous oversized windows. Classic design elements include two brick fireplaces, wood floors, neutral paint colors and generous room sizes. For outdoor enjoyment, the side deck and rear patio overlook an open, level and gently rolling grounds.

Introducing the home is a foyer flanked by the dining and living rooms. Anchoring the living room is a brick fireplace with a carved wood mantle, while recessed lights, built-in bookcases, a transom-topped picture window and French door to the deck are additional amenities. The dining room has a brick fireplace edged by an antique wood mantle, roomy built-in window seat, wood floors and crown moldings.

Connected to the dining room is the updated kitchen featuring white cabinets, dark countertops, a subway tile backsplash, decorative brick fireplace, stainless steel appliances and a Dutch door to the rear patio. There is a study or den on this level, plus a full bath.

Upstairs, the spacious master bedroom contains three closets, a vaulted ceiling, recessed lights and a master office with closet. Another bedroom presents high angled ceilings and a windowed sitting area. The main bath is designed with beadboard walls, a modern sink vanity, tub/shower enclosed by clear glass doors and recessed lights. A partial basement is unfinished, and storage options are easily met in the detached two-car garage. A Far Hills mailing address, generator hook-ups and central air conditioning are further notable features in this captivating home.

Located in Chester Township, this home is a quick drive to the quaint shops and eateries lining Chester’s Main Street, several shopping centers including The Streets of Chester for upscale stores, and a grocery store. Chester is minutes from Morristown, Interstates 78 and 287, bus and rail service, recreational opportunities and highly-rated public and private schools. New Jersey Transit trains are less than ten minutes away in Gladstone.

About Chester Township

When talking about Chester in southwestern Morris County, you need to distinguish between the Borough of Chester, which is the shopping village, and Chester Township, the surrounding area which is decidedly more rural. At about 1½-square miles, the borough is located at the intersection of Routes 206 and 24 and offers quaint streetscapes lined with one-of-a-kind boutiques, antique shops and restaurants. Chester Township includes 29.8 square miles of farmland, newer residential developments and historic homes.

Incorporated in 1799, over 40%--or 12 square miles--of the township is preserved as open space. There are nature reserves, parks and deed-restricted agricultural property under the state Farmland Preservation Program, which buys the development rights while allowing the farmer to retain title and continue working the land.

The Borough of Chester was incorporated in 1930, and is a separate municipality that shares many services with the township such as a library, first aid squad, fire department, community pool, athletic programs, civic organizations and schools.
